Quick Ow

Very, very quick post!

I had a very full day yesterday.  I'm currently doing my PSPO training (Professional Scrum Product Owner), hoping to get certified in the coming two weeks when I get the courage to do the exam!

After a long, interesting day my head was full of information (and ideas for the office) and as we finished earlier than planned I took a small detour on the way to my sister in laws (we eat there once a week) and picked her up from the office.  After getting lost as her office building is supposedly too new to be in the Sat Nav!

Once home (after a great evening with my in laws as normal) things went really wrong.

I went up to the attic to feed the cat.  On the way down I checked to see that he was OK (instead of looking where I was going) and slipped at the edge of the steps.  I managed to stop myself by grabbing the handrail, but not before falling half a flight of twisty, open steps and getting my foot trapped through one of the open steps.

Awful feeling when you think that you are about to break either your leg or back and there is nothing you can do.  Thankfully catching the handrail stopped serious injury, but I don't think I have ever heard the sound I made coming from me before - kind of terror mixed with pain.

I think I am not working our tonight - I kept screaming in agony whenever I put pressure on the pain points through the night (apparently even when asleep) and whilst it doesn't seem too bad when sitting still now, whenever I move it all comes back...

Oh well...  Time to finish my cappuccino and get to the second day of the training.

  1. That doesn't sound good. I hope it doesn't swell too much. Dr's ?

    No heels for a while ?

    1. It didn't swell (phew!) but last night when I touched the area that hurt I hit the ceiling (and walking was difficult). Not so bad now, but stairs hurt.

      Heels... Do boots with a 6cm heel count? That's what I had for the training :) If my foot had swollen then I would have had a problem - most of my shoes have something of a heel in them (from 4cm to 8cm). The flats that I do have would not be good for a swollen foot!

      I'm supposed to be shopping for new heels tomorrow - I'll have to see if that is going to work!

      When we visit my sister in law we always keep the cat inside (we don't like him being out late when we are not here - yes, we may be overprotective). And he always eats in the attic - it's his space! I must point out though that it's fixed steps to the attic, it's not just a storage space through a hatch :)

  3. Oh no!!!! So sorry, Stace!

    I would second Becca: you might consider a doctor. It's entirely possible you sprained/fractured/broke a bone or ligament(s). I fractured my ankle when I was 15 and played baseball on it for two hours. I've also walked on a broken foot for literally months without knowing it. We tend to have a high pain threshold (it's how we deal with the dysphoria for so long), so you may not realize the extent of your injury.

    Foot woes must be contagious. My ankle rolled on me again on Monday night. I was foolishly trying to bring my backpack, laptop bag, and gym bag upstairs simultaneously, and the ankle simply couldn't take the strain.

    I learned my lesson: the brace is back on, where it should have been all along. Live and learn. (It did not stop me from exercising, of course!)

    1. It's really got much, much better over the last couple of days. On Thursday I could not walk up stairs (in fact walking in general wasn't too pleasant). But I can now do stairs with no issue, and even managed a semi sprint in heels when I was late!

      Bad luck on the ankle! I know from past experience that when you really damage your ankle it can take years to get back to full strength. I fell down some stairs in college and for the following 10 years I could sprain my ankle on the smallest of uneven paving slabs. It's fine now, but I had to treat it, not with kid gloves, but respect. Anyway, beterschap!

      Sending them back from dry, if damn chilly, Holland!

    2. Glad to hear that yours is feeling better, Stace. That's very encouraging. And sprinting in heels? Color me impressed! :c)

      As for me, I have switched back to my wrap, rather than my brace. Progress is welcome no matter how small the increment! Anyway, go raibh maith agat, Breitheamh! ;c)

  4. I feel your pain - literally. After an unfortunate case of trip-n-stumble on a loose cable I now have a left big toe that is an interesting shade of purple.

    Here's to healing, put your feet up & rest :)

    1. Can we make an agreement to stop injuring ourselves please! Oddly enough mine only hurt. I had several small bruises where the skin was trapped against the steps, but they were gone by the morning.

      Now it only hurts when I touch it.

      I did miss my Thursday workout, seeing as walking was still not fun yesterday I left the exercise. If all is well I am planning on running in the morning though :)

      This evening though, rest :)

  5. Definitely feel your pain Stace.
    I twisted my ankle jumping down from a step ladder a couple of years ago and it swelled up like a balloon.
    I'd definitely see about getting it checked out though if you're still having problems with it.

    I think Cass is right about us having high pain thresholds. I know that I can take a fair level of pain and distress. I know when I'm getting near to my limits because I find myself having to fight the urge to burst out laughing.

    1. Ow! That cannot have been pleasant! I do mine occasionally with small jumps (a left over from when I was at college) and whilst it's not bad enough to swell you feel the heat spread throughout the whole ankle - the thought is bad enough.

      As I say, it's getting much better now, thanks. It's moving along as it should.

      I guess we do. I hurt alone most of the time. If I'm with someone then I generally just carry on if I can.

    2. I knew I had a problem when the doctor was pushing directly on what turned out to be a broken bone in my foot and the most I could muster was that it was mildly uncomfortable. I still remember how shocked he was that I walked around on it for what was likely months.

      My therapist pointed out that my recent panic attack was actually a positive thing - because I let it happen, rather than simply ignore it. Odd to think that something so unpleasant could be encouraging!

      As they used to say at the beginning of Hill Street Blues here in the States: "Let's be careful out there." :c)
