About 12 months ago I brought myself a 13" MacBook Pro to replace the Sony TZ 21 that I ruined by dropping a sheet of metal on the screen (DOH!).
For the last 6 months or so it's been languishing in the spare room, unused and unloved as I have come to hate the thing. And hate OSX even more.
What's more Mrs Stace hates it even more than I do so I couldn't even give it to her.
What to do then... Well after trying it again this week and wanting to throw it through a window within 20 seconds of starting it I decided I had to give boot camp another go.
So... I'm typing this on a Windows 7 MacBook Pro :)
And... First impressions are not bad. Performance is acceptable (actually better than it did under Lion) and I can live with the screen (though it's still not great - why people rave about the non-retina Apple screens I don't know).
But... It does feel like a workhorse again, rather than toy. Now for the Visual Studio and SQL Server tools and I'll be ready to go!
Funny how some OSs just don't feel right. I guess it's just a personal preference! Well, unless we're talking about Windows 8 :-)

Yes, both Mrs Stace and I really can't see what all the fuss about OSX actually is.
DeleteWindows 8 - I still have to have a try of it, though I'm not impressed with what I have seen so far...
I've tried Linux a few times, but to be honest it's just not what I need from an OS...

Win8? It as if someone's taken the best parts of Win7 (for those of us who like the OS ;-) ), sped them up a bit and then plonked the rather tedious Metro interface on top. There are lots of reviews and I've tried it twice. Each time, it last a few days on a test machine and I went back to Windows 7. My main issue is that it seems to be a tablet OS, not a multi-monitor + mouse working office system. Shame. I had hoped that MS had learned from the Vista fiasco, but it seems the MarketingBorg have steamrolled through the company once again. :-(

DeleteNo, I started with OSX and get that annoyed with it that the machine sat unused for months.
Nope, I installed windows, and have reduced the OSX partition to the smallest I thought I could get away with. The rest is all for Windows!

DeleteLOL I did the same thing at work since I was not allowed to use my own hardware anymore. That and the windows laptop were awful. Best part Windows 7 can boot a macbook without the need for OSX or Bootcamp to even be installed.
ReplyDeleteWithout boot camp? That would be even better - there is 100GB of the disk that is still in use for the OSx partition that I would love to get rid of.
DeleteAs luck would have it someone has shown an interest in the MacBook this week. If they want to give me what I am asking for it then it may be replaced with either an Asus Zenbook with the 3rd gen i7 processor and Full HD screen, or a Vaio with the same similar specs.
Of course if they don't then the Mac will remain a Windows machine - since installing Windows I haven't booted into OSx and except for the thunderbolt port not working as a mini-display port (so I can't use external monitors) it's been fine to use.
